How to play
The goal
Reversi (Othello) is a two-player game on an 8×8 board played with double-sided discs. The aim is to finish with more discs of your colour than your opponent.
How to play
On your turn you place one disc so that it flanks — traps in a straight line — one or more of the opponent's discs between your new disc and another of your colour. Every trapped disc flips to your colour. You may only move where at least one disc flips; if you can't, your turn is skipped.
Winning the game
Play continues until neither player can move, usually when the board is full. Whoever has more discs wins. Corners are powerful because they can never be flipped — controlling them is the key to strong play.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Reversi the same as Othello?
- Yes — Reversi and Othello are the same game. The modern standardised rules with the fixed starting position are usually called Othello.
- What is the best strategy in Reversi?
- Don't grab the most discs early. Play for mobility and the corners: avoid giving your opponent a corner, and aim for stable edge and corner discs that can't be flipped back.
- Can I play Reversi against the computer?
- Yes. Pick vs computer and choose a difficulty, or play a friend in real time. There is also an interactive how-to tutorial.
