How to play

The goal

Connect Four is a two-player game on a vertical grid of 7 columns and 6 rows. Players take turns dropping discs into a column; a disc falls to the lowest free slot. The goal is to be first to line up four of your discs in a row.

How to play

Choose a column to drop your disc. You can connect four horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Because pieces stack, every move both builds your own threats and blocks your opponent's.

Winning the game

The first player to make a line of four wins immediately. If the board fills with no four-in-a-row, the game is a draw. Controlling the centre column is a strong advantage.

Frequently asked questions

Who wins Connect Four with perfect play?
Connect Four is solved: with perfect play the first player can force a win by starting in the centre column. In practice, good central play and double threats decide most games.
What is the best first move in Connect Four?
Play the centre column. It takes part in the most possible four-in-a-rows, so it gives you the most threats and the best defence.
Is Connect Four free on Playza?
Yes — it's free, runs in the browser, and you can play a friend in real time or face the AI bot.
